Rule Yourself Campaign
Michael Phelps Ad
Grand Prix in Film Craft
Soundtrack: The Kills "The Last Goodbye"
As an ex-swimmer, this commercial really grabbed my attention from the start. The dark opening scenes of water and motion, as we then see olympic swimmer Michael Phelps moving through the water in swift streamline movements. The music picks up and we get visuals of him working out and putting in 110% in not only the pool but also the gym. The song playing in the background is ironic, because the lyrics "I have no regrets for the past is behind" play as Phelps is shown resting and doing good things, whereas a few years back there was great controversy when he was found participating in illegal things. But this just shows that he has grown and moved on from it and it has not put a stop to his career, if anything it has pushed him to go harder. The visuals in this ad are strong and sharp, with the music still playing you can still hear the splash of water, or the lifting of weights. You can also see the effort he is putting in as his facial expressions are painful and realistic. The determination shown in this ad is evident, and it really does define "Rule Yourself" as he is working alone through most of the ad. Pushing himself to go farther and harder then evidently ever. The final scene of him swimming the longest pool in the dark as the words "It's what you do in the dark" and then "That puts you in the light" and finally "Rule Yourself. I Will" in bold letters flash across the screen. And the voiceover of the crowd cheering wild, as he is successfully now "in the light." The intensity of this commercial really pulls on everyone's inner or past athlete, as most of us know that it really is what you do "in the dark" that is going to make you succeed "in the light."
